Oxygen Permeability, OTR of Contact Lenses Materials

  Abstract: oxygen permeability, OTR of contact lens, which has a direct influence on wearer amenity, is an important index of contact lens. This article deals with the importance, influencing factors and testing method of oxygen permeability of contact lens

  Speaking of contact lenses, the most common thing we thought of is their 'contact' effect. Contact lenses correct vision by directly adhering to the surface of eye cornea to change diopter. Therefore, they possess a lot of unique merits comparing with frame glasses. For example, it applies no compression to nose bridge and ears, and is especially applicable to some special professions such as actor and athlete. Actually, the functions of contact lenses are not limit to the correction of shortsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. They have other functions such as treating color blindness and some ophthalmocace by medication absorption.

1. Material Requirements of Contact Lens

  Wearers attach particular importance to the selection of lens material because it adheres directly to eye cornea. With the influence of advertisement, many wearers go in for lenses of high moisture content in selecting contact lenses. In their eyes, the higher the moisture content, the better the lens quality. In fact, the pursuit of higher moisture content is very wrong in contact lens selection. Wearers should also take secretory volume of tears, working and living environment into account. Actually, oxygen permeability of lenses is the most important index. The discomforts and wearing time mainly depends on lens oxygen permeability. Moreover, higher moisture content and ultra thin that are advertised now are to improve lens oxygen permeability.

  Oxygen deficit, which is caused by inability of eye cornea to obtain oxygen, is the most common trouble of wearing contact lenses. Originally, cornea breathes by obtaining oxygen from air directly. When contact lens adheres to eyeball surface, oxygen can still transmits through lenses, but the transmitting rate reduces obviously. Newly increased vessel caused by cornea oxygen deficit will appear as red heron and will increase the opportunity of infection of eyes. For that reason, contact lenses of higher oxygen permeability should be selected. Oxygen permeability of lenses is related with lens moisture content and lens thickness because oxygen is transmitted by water. However, the crucial factor that influences wearing effect is whether contact lenses match eye cornea.

2. Oxygen Permeability Testing

  As mentioned above, oxygen permeability of contact lenses has a direct influence on wearer comforts and will in turn affect the sales. That is why oxygen permeability testing attracts particular attention of lens manufacturers.

  ISO issued special testing standards for the oxygen permeability testing of contact lenses: ISO 9913-1 Optics and Optical Instruments-Contact Lenses-Part 1: Determination of Oxygen Permeability and Transmissibility with the FATT Method and ISO 9913-2 Optics and Optical Instruments -Contact Lenses-Part2: Determination of Oxygen Permeability and Transmissibility by the Coulometric Method. Testing principal and testing instruments in ISO 9913-2 is very similar to that used in coulometric method in oxygen permeability testing of flexible material. Many manufacturers of contact lens have been authorizing Labthink to test the oxygen permeability of lens materials and have got ideal testing results.

  ISO 9913-2 is suitable for rigid and non-hydrogel flexible contact lens materials. The testing indexes are oxygen flux-j, oxygen permeability -Dk, oxygen transmissibility-Dk/t and specimen thickness-t. Generally, Dk is used to evaluate the permeability index of contact lenses. Testing principle is illustrated as fig. 1: put specimen into testing chamber to divide the chamber into upper and lower parts. Fill testing gas into upper chamber with the oxygen content at a fixed rate. Carrier gas flows into coulometric sensor from lower chamber, by which an equal pressure between two sides of the specimen is maintained. However, oxygen partial pressure is different. Under the function of partial pressure, oxygen will transmits into carrier gas through film and will be carried into coulometric sensor, where oxygen quantity in nitrogen gas can be calculated accurately and then oxygen transmissibility of the material can be calculated. Oxygen permeability instrument should be calibrated with reference film before testing to determine the calibration factor, which will be used in calibration. It is regulated in standard ISO 9913 that calibration specimen SRM 1470 is the same as that used in standard ASTM D 3985 for film testing.

  Testing process includes the following steps: purge system, diverge oxygen gas into upper chamber, sensor output becomes stable (judging whether transmitting achieves equilibrium), and obtain testing result. There are mainly two differences between testing of contact lenses and flexible package testing: one is the specimen fixture, specimen shape and area; the second difference is testing environment. Testing temperature of film oxygen permeability is 23?. To simulate practical service condition, testing temperature of contact lenses is 35?. Since temperature fluctuation has an obvious influence on testing results of oxygen permeability, the stability of testing temperature is of great significance. Therefore, it is better that the instruments possess function of temperature controlling, just as Labthink TOY-C2 Oxygen Permeability Tester.

3. Influence of Lenses Suitability on Oxygen Permeability

  Whether contact lenses are suitable mainly depends on the perfection of suitability.  A pair of good contact lenses should match with eye cornea perfectly. There is a layer of tear existing between contact lens and eye cornea, and is constantly flowing. The tears bring oxygen to cornea and take off waste substance. In this way, contact lenses will not change the normal physiological condition of eyes and will not impair eye cornea. If the contact lens doesn't match well with eye cornea, even ultra thin lenses of high moisture content will adhere closely to the cornea with the result that the flowing of oxygen can only rely on moisture content and thickness of the lens. Of course, high oxygen permeability is always favorable, no matter what the kind of suitability is.

4. Conclusion

  Oxygen permeability of contact lens, which has a direct influence on wearing comforts, is an important index. That is why manufacturers of various contact lenses are trying their best to improve oxygen permeability of contact lenses. At present, the marketing of PGP has obviously influenced market share of traditional flexible contact lenses. The outstanding merit of RGP is high oxygen permeability, which makes no oxygen deficit of eye cornea. With RGP, many complications caused by flexible contact lenses can be avoided. Therefore, RGP has become known and encouraged by most experts.

a question for a mechanic?

iam not too bad,when it comes to working on cars,but this car has got me stumped.i have a 1988 olds 3.8 and all of my plugs are black,and the following things i have put on it are,new gas filter,Air Filter,idle air control,throttle position sensor,cleaned the throttle body,new plugs and adjusted them at 0.60,new plug wires,new fuel pump regulator,the fuel pump is new,new coil and module,i was told the oxygen sensor can act up and the check engine light doesnt have to come on.can a oxygen sensor make plugs black?and by the way,i also got a new cat on it.iam asking you guys,if you got any ideas if it could be the oxygen sensor.iam running out of ideas.i appreciate any help you can give me.thanks alot guys.

i own a shop and yes a 0-2 sensor will make them burn black ,it causes it to load up and run rich just about all the time,just enough to make the plugs run black in it,that's a good engine your working on if its running right the plugs should get a light grayish look to them,if there not, id replace the 0-2 sensor it helps control the fuel flow to the engine,good luck with it hope this helps.

I know you have heard of Craigslist, but do you really know how to use this internet classified website to your advantage for good deals on used welding equipment?

Most people I know just pull up Craigslist and enter a search term like "Lincoln Invertec welder" and go through the results one by one shopping for the best price on a welder. That is the extent of their shopping online for used welding equipment.

But there are a few tips and tricks that will help you get the best deal on a Craigslist Welding Machine.

Tip #1  Craigslist only allows you to shop by location on their site but if you want to get an idea of what price you an expect  you might want to search all of Craigslist.  The way to search the whole country is to either go to Google and type Craigslist.  Usually the first result also provides a search box that lets you search all items on Craigslist regardless of location.  The other trick is to just enter an advanced site search into Google search box  for example if you were searching for a miller Tig Welder you would enter this into the Google search bar:

miller tig welder site:craigslist.org

What you will see next is a bunch of listings of the different Craigslist cities that have listings that include the term "miller tig welder".

Tip #2  Another Tip for getting good deals on used welding equipment is to search your local Craiglist listings for mispellings.  Mispelled words like linclon instead of lincoln or sycrowave instead of syncrowave will sometimes find you good deals that have not been snatched up yet simply because people are not seeing the listing due to the mispelled word.

Tip #3  If you are shopping for a big and expensive item like a Miller Syncrowave 250 or 300, You might think about looking at cities that are within driving distance.  I have a friend who did this and wound up driving from Atlanta to Nashville but got a good Miller Syncrowave 250 for about $1300.

Since some of them sell for around $ 2000, it was definitely worth the drive.

Tip #4  Insist on seeing a real picture of the welding equipment.  Too many listings just use a photo snagged off the web.  If a seller is not willing to send a real photo...walk away from the deal, period.

I have a PTA-17 torch and I want to use a PTA-26, what adapter do I need to run the bigger torch?

I bought a Lincoln Invertec V155-S, it came with a PTA-17V torch and I bought a PTA-26FV but it has bigger threads and I cannot find anywhere what adapter I need.

Where Have All the War Jobs Gone?

The Iraq war has cost us all a great deal.  In terms of the taxes, we’ve paid heavily towards invading Iraq needlessly, and we continue to pay towards the ongoing war effort. In terms of the economy, we’ve paid the price thanks to NAFTA and service contract outsourcing. In terms of human lives, we’ve paid the price with our young adults. But from the wreckage of Iraq and the disaster of an invasion that took place initially, the advantages of war have been cast to foreign shores, diverting jobs from the struggling US employment market to the detriment of the economy.

The jobs arising from Iraq and the rebuilding effort could have gone to American families.  However, the North American Free Trade Agreement has meant that jobs have been diverted largely to Mexico and Canada, resulting in further damage to the US economy as a result of the campaign in Iraq. And at a time when all Americans and the economy could benefit from extra job opportunities. So who’s to blame for this economic catastrophe?

Well, controversial war author and outspoken critic of the Bush regime, Bob Miller knows exactly why this disastrous campaign has gone from bad to worse.

“Had they [impeached Bush], a million or more people, 4,000 of them young Americans, would still be alive. The Secret Service can lock me up and keep me locked up if it pleases them, but not in a thousand years could Al-Qaeda devalue our flag and dollar like Bush and his accomplices have.”

When you send Goering and Himmler mentality to the President and Vice President's offices, there is no reason to expect other than a Goering and Himmler administration.”

Whether or not you agree with Bob Miller’s perspective, the issue remains that the US economy has been significantly hindered by the Iraq war. Apart from the terrible loss of life and hardship that’s been caused, the American economy is charging head first into a recession while the war jobs are going elsewhere.  NAFTA or not, this is no doubt a further catastrophe in a long line of catastrophes instigated by the current George W. Bush administration.

And so the lies cast in the run-up to the Iraq war, and the unforgivable policy blunders along the way, continue with the denial of war jobs to US citizens. At a time when our economy needs all the help it can get, the needless diversion of jobs by treaty and outsourcing to foreign shores have left us feeling the moral and economic heat from our expeditions into the Middle East. With the Bush/Cheney administration on the way out, Bob Miller and fellow critics of the current administration hope to finally see beyond the worst US President in history into a new era where common sense and integrity prevail.
