Mig Flux Core

The Hobart Trek 180 is a portable battery powered Mig Welder. The only one ever made that has enough sack to weld 3/8" thick steel.

I had a chance to do a review on a Hobart Trek 180 mig machine and I really put it thru the ringer. Most Welding Machine reviews I have read only go so far as running a bead or two. I did that too, but I took it a step further...

I actually welded an AWS standard bend test with it! But did it pass?

The Hobart Trek 180 is capable of running either.024" --.035" bare wire or.030" or.035" flux core Welding Wire.

The bend test I did was with the smaller.024" diameter ER70S-6 bare wire and 75/25 argon/CO2 shielding gas.

The test metal was 3/8" thick and was welded in the vertical position. The root pass was welded downhill and the rest of the welding passes were done uphill.

Halfway thru the last pass the low battery light came on and the machine quit welding. So I plugged in into a 115v 20 amp breaker, let it charge for about 20 minutes and finished the weld.

Then I cut 2 bend straps out of the plate, ground the weld smooth and bend the straps 180 degrees on the weld. One root bend and one face bend were tested.

The results? A little indication on the side of one of the straps indicated a bit of sidewall lack of fusion but other than that...

It passed the bend test.

Which is better, flux Core Wire fed Mig Welders or stick mig welders?

I'm trying to decide between these two types of welders to get. I'm only going to be welding Mild Steel (under 1/4 in.) and maybe Sheet Metal and am looking at two 120V input models.
The wire fed welder is rated at 90 AMPs max while the the Stick Welder is rated at 120 AMPs max.
I've done some Stick Welding in the past and have done very well with it. But is the wire fed welder more versatile?

hope this helps you i have used both there are disadvantages to both of them but as far as i am concerned the Wire Welder is the best for the home owner this is why i think you have to keep the rods dry on stick welder the electrodes burn UP very easily if you do a lot of welding you will probably never need the amps that stick welder has any way we had a stick welder when i was growing up and i cut my teeth on one learning how to weld i was pretty good at the heavy stuff of course heavy on a farm like we had was plow sheer or a pair of post hole diggers that need new point s the wire welder needs a lot less maintains it will do any thing that you will need to do the only thing that i would say is get the one that use argon not flux core it looks like it more expensive but if you get right down to it you will get better welds with it then with flux core with a lot less slag then the flux core and you can a little thicker material if you need to You may not need to a buy a brand mane like Lincon or miller there or some out there that are just as good for people like you and me the one i have is Titian it is not made to be used every day but then i am not not use=ing to make a living either it will weld up to 5/16 if you let take it s time it will do ever thing that you want i think let me know what you think douglassmith1957@yahoo.com put ask in the subject line

The Process of Metal Working

Metalworking is the process of working with metals to create a diverse range of products, from the hulls of ships to engagement rings.

There are many reasons to practice metalworking.  Metalworking can be used for experimentation, to create works of art, for enjoyment, as its own profession, or as part of a profession. The many specialized fields of modern metalworking can be grouped under the categories of joining, forming, or cutting.

Welding joins two pieces of metal through the use of heat, pressure, or some combination of the two.  Though a third agent is often introduced to the process and melted between the two workpieces to aid in the weld, in order to be a true weld, the two pieces must blend and coalesce.  Brazing and Soldering are also standard metalworking joining processes.  These differ from welding in that only a filler metal is melted between the two workpieces, while the workpieces themselves do not coalesce, and remain unchanged.  Because it occurs at a much higher temperature and with different filler metals, brazed joints are much stronger than soldered.

Forming modifies metal without removing or adding anything to the original workpiece.  This can be done with pressure and/or heat.  Forming processes include casting, the melting and pouring of metal into a mold, as well as many processes performed with the metal at room temperature, such as bending, drawing, rolling, and stamping.

Cutting processes are any of those used in metalworking that results in a separation of the workpiece into two pieces.  Machining uses cutting instruments such as a drill or saw, and produces swarf (chips of metal).  Burning uses a torch, and does not produce swarf.

* Grinding is a metalworking process in which an abrasive, fast spinning disk is used to remove small amounts of the workpiece to smooth edges and create a smooth finish.  Grinding can also be used as a cutting technique.

* Milling shapes metal by cutting away unneeded parts to reveal the final shape.  Milling is able to produce complex three dimensional objects with a high degree of precision.  Milling machines can be completely or partially automated by computer controls.  Almost any metal can be milled, though different metals require different bits and bit speeds, depending on the hardness of the material.  A liquid coolant is required to keep the material and bit from being deformed.  This combines to make milling a costly process that must be factored into the final cost of the product being milled.

* Drilling and tapping produce holes in metal through the use of a drill and drill bit.  This is the fastest way to machine material from a workpiece.  Tapping uses a bit that cuts a female thread into the workpiece, creating a screw thread where a screw can be fastened.

* Filing is the use of a file to grind small bits of material away from the workpiece by hand.  It is commonly used for deburring.

* Turning is the term used to refer to metalworking processes performed on a lathe.  Other processes can be performed on a lathe, such as basic milling, but turning is always performed on a lathe.  Lathes turn blocks or cylinders of metal at high speeds while different tools are applied to the workpiece, shaving away layers to produce the desired shape.  Turning produces symmetrical objects such as table legs.

Different primary cutting processes exist which may or may not be used in conjunction with the above techniques.  These include laser cutting, abrasive water jet cutting, plasma arc cutting, and oxyfuel cutting.

* Laser cutting uses either a gas or solid state laser to produce an extremely precise cutting area with very little heat affected zone.  This method is expensive, and does not always work on material that is thick or highly reflective.

* Abrasive water jet cutting uses a pressurized stream of water with an added abrasive to cut metals with high precision and a low heat affected zone.  While this method is less expensive than laser cutting, it has the disadvantage of being slow, thus reducing output.

* Plasma arc cutting uses a high speed gas simultaneously with an electrical arc between the nozzle and workpiece that combines to form plasma hot enough to cut the metal.  The plasma is instantly blown away by the gas, reducing the size of the heat affected zone.  Plasma Cutting is quick, inexpensive, able to cut almost any metal, and capable of cutting very thick pieces and sheets.  It leaves a large heat affected zone and forms dross at the bottom of the cut, making it less precise than laser or abrasive water jet cutting.

* Oxyfuel cutting uses a mixture of oxygen and gas which combined and burned in torch, just as in oxyfuel welding.  Oxyfuel cutting is very low cost, but it is slow, produces a large heat affected zone requiring additional machining, and is less precise than some other methods.

Steel Welding Wire spool mystery?

I bought a used Wire Welder with a spool already installed, with a regulator, but no Gas Cylinder, and indications from the guy who sold it was that he wasn't using gas with it. The wire, though, is .025" and my pretty strong impression is that wire that small couldn't be Flux Core. The wire is off-color -- kind of brownish -- however, and I wonder if that could possibly be a flux coating. ? Doesn't look like rust and it's certainly not bronze or brass wire. I can't contact the guy who sold it any more ... don't seem to have his contact info (wife deleted emails and he's not in the phone book). The sticker on the side of the spool isn't helpful at all. Anyone hazard a guess as to what material this is and whether or not I can use it without gas? Thanks for hints!!

Is the any info on the label? An AWS or ASME specification or class? Maybe an SFA number? Something might be helpful to us.

From your description of the wire, I would venture a guess that it is a solid wire meant to weld Mild Steel. The brownish color could be the copper coating that has started to oxidize. And yes, I find it hard to believe that he was using the wire without a shielding gas. But if you could let us know what info was on the tag we might be able to offer more info.

Instruction To Use Mig Welder

Mig Welders can be useful tools to connect two metal surfaces together. MIG welder required careful operation due to involve gas, fire and electricity. That may seem like a dangerous combination, but with proper care, a MIG welder can be safely utilized.

The steps needed for operating a MIG welder.

Before use MIG welder, wear personal protective equipment like Welding Gloves, Welding Helmet, hearing and eye protection wear to protect from sparks of MIG welder can easily burn or blind instantly. Protective eyewear because of the light alone that comes from the welding is dangerous to look at without protection. If possible, get a helmet that automatically darkens when the MIG welder is operating.

Adjust the tip voltage to the proper setting. The tip voltage determines how deep your welding will penetrate the surface you are working on. If your setting is too low, you will only create melting on the surface. If the setting is too high, you might put a hole in your material.

Set the feed rate of the MIG welder. The feed rate controls gas you let the welder expunge depending on the material you are working with, the feed rate may need to be adjusted higher or lower.

Zigzag patterns are the best way to create a good weld because they do not allow the arc to stay in one place too long. If it does, the arc can destroy your material rather than weld it.

Follow this instruction and read your manual before you attempt to do any welding

1. Locate a 220V outlet.

2. Plug in MIG Welder into the outlet.

3. Attach ground cord into the welder.

4. Attach Wire Feed Welder Cord into the welder.

5. Attach the welder's feed wire.

6. Adjust the voltage and wire feed rate to preferred settings.

7. Switch on the welder.

8. Use the wire bush to clean the surface that will be welded.

9. Use the ground cord from the welder to cramp onto the piece of steel to be welded.

10. Place the welding handle near your starting position.

11. Pull your helmet over your face.

12. Begin welding by pulling the wire feed trigger.

13. Weave a wire feed from side to side.

14. Continue welding until you see expected outcome.

Would a wire Feed Welder be sufficient to weld in body panels on a vehicle?

I'm planning on doing some body repairs on my truck. Wondering if a Wire Feed Welder would be sufficient to weld in body panel repair kits, or, do I need to get a MIG welder? Anyone have any experience with the two, and which do you prefer? I used both in high school and college, but that's going on 10+ years ago now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

A MIG welder is also wire feed, but the wire is surrounded by a shielding gas. I suspect you are wanting to use a "Flux Core wire feed welder" and yes, it will weld body panels just fine if you do your part. If you haven't done any welding in 10 years plan on welding all the non-visible areas first so when you start weling places you can see the welds will be good enough you can grind them down and fill them in so they look nice. Flux core gives you more spatter but nothing insurmountable if you are diligent in paying attention to details.

I want to build a Spot light with 18 LEDs Superbright , White, for 220 V (AC), socket GU10.?

It;s cleat that i have to find a socket (an old halogen light), but i think i have to use some resistances or something. Can someoane give an ideea on how can I do it? Thanks

This is not a trivial problem. First, the LEDs emit in a fairly broad forward pattern, not exactly what you want for a spotlight. You will need to arrange them in a tight cluster and place them at the focus of a parabolic reflector, pointing inward toward the reflector, not outward. Perhaps you can salvage such a reflector from a discarded spotlight that used an incandescent lamp. Second, the usual way to power bright white LEDs is with a switching Power Supply. The 220 VAC line is first full-wave rectified with a diode bridge rectifier, then the DC output is applied as the input to the switching regulator. A transformer is usually required to lower the output voltage, along with an inductor, a capacitor, a fast-switching diode, and the integrated circuit switching power supply controller, and perhaps a power FET to switch the primary of the transformer if the IC doesn’t have the required voltage or current capability.

There are “cookbook” circuits available on-line for this, but it does require some skill and knowledge to implement the circuit correctly and reliably. I would not recommend trying to operate a series string of LEDs directly from the power line. The reverse voltage will kill them. Use a step-down transformer, followed by a full-wave bridge rectifier and filter capacitor, to power a series-connected string of LEDs through a current limiting resistor. This is not very efficient, however.
