CNC Router General Overview

Many people say that a CNC Router is the best tool they have in their shop. One of the reasons why is because it is such a versatile machine and it cuts the time it takes to cut and prepare things down.

CNC Routers are machines that work in different directions. They can work in these directions simultaneously to develop patterns and shapes that the operator would take a long time to do by hand. The CNC Router moves along an axis to cut front to back, left to right or up and down.

One of the things that you will have to know as an operator of this machine is basic CAD software because this is what it uses to create the work. It is flexible enough that you can create the program you want at your own PC or through using the computer on the machine.

What you do with the CAD Software is to create files that you can put into the computer to show the Router the exact moves you want it to make. This allows you do pretty much whatever you want with it.

How A CNC Router Works

The CNC Router is very easy to run once you have the software in place. All you have to do is take the material you are using and place it on the table where you have the machine. You hold it in place and then allow the router to do the work, following the specifications you put into the computer.

You don't have to worry about getting dust in your lungs because there is a dust hood on the machine that collects any debris or dust that comes off the material so that the air is free of any materials that may be harmful to the individual.

The router has motors that actually help drive the system on its axes to make the cuts in all the directions. The drive system is important to the machine because the better is it the higher the quality you will have in your routing. The CNC router bits are actually controlled by a spindle and these come in several different shapes and sizes like you would find if you were using a power tool with drill bits.

It is important to note that whenever you are operating any machine you have to think about safety first and this is true of using a CNC Router. Although the machine comes with guards that can stop your hands from getting hurt while feeding materials, you should also use common sense when operating the machine. There is a system of stop buttons on various parts of the machine as well. However, you should make sure just as an added protection to wear gloves and sound blocking materials to avoid accidents.

The CNC Router is economical too because once you program it you don't have to watch over it. Instead, you can go do other work or take a break while it does the work for you. It also opens up the chance to do projects that used to require a team of people to do.

What is a good depth to engrave wood?

I want to use my CNC machine that is mounted with a router to engrave a design into wood. What is a good depth to set?

depends on what kind of cutter your useing
if its a flat mill bit start at 1/8 inch go to 1/4 inch
if its a bull nose go to 1/4 inch

Un55B7000 Led - Finally An Lcd Competes With The Best Plasmas

The UN55B7000 LED is Samsung's current flagship model and is the successor to the LN55A950.

Picture Quality
A full LED backlit LCD offering a stunning 7 million:1 contrast separates the UN55B7000 LED from other LCDs by reaching deep into pitch black, formerly only possible with plasmas. Some LCDs turn off pixels to achieve inky blacks - ok for still pictures, but too slow to work with most video - basically a gimmick to inflate contrast numbers. The UN55B7000 LED however, masters the darkest blacks and brightest whites to produce a bold three dimensional effect or "pop." In a dark room, the UN55B7000 LED outperforms every LCD on the market, shy of the coveted pioneer plasmas. In a moderate to bright environment however, the UN55B7000 LED absolutely dominates.

The highly reflective screen can be annoying for those with unfortunately placed light sources or windows without blinds. A matte screen, as on the LG 55LH90, might be a better fit for some, but a matte screen diffuses the light causing the entire screen to lose those desirable inky blacks. I can't say one is better than the other, but for a TV that can produce such dark blacks, I think the glossy screen makes more sense.

Motion handling is the best of any LCD I've seen thanks to separate blur and judder adjustments and very few motion artifacts. Blu-ray discs will exhibit perfect cinema-like panning or, if you want, a more smooth and clear pan similar to a home video. My verizon fios hd occasionally shows judder when there should a smooth flow of movement. The UN55B7000 LED can help minimalize this, but it is not powerful enough to eliminate it and if set poorly, it can be made worse.

After some quick, basic calibration colors are vivid and mostly accurate. Noise and artifacts are very minimal on 720p and non existent on 1080p. Haloing (i.e. white text on black background cause background to lighten near text) is only visible rarely unless viewing from greater than 30° off center and increases in severity as viewing angle increases. Viewing from greater than 30° off center vertically or horizontally also causes a slight loss, contrast and color depth. Viewing from greater than 50° off causes a significant loss in contrast and color, creating a flat image and showing major haloing effects. The ideal viewing range is within 15° of center, though if centered vertically, image is barely degraded at all up to 30° off center. Ideal viewing distance is roughly 8 to 14 feet for 720p and 5 to 10 feet for 1080p, though don't take those numbers too seriously, you can obviously enjoy this TV from just about any distance. At 4 feet or less though, the 46" model is a better choice.

Ease of Use
The preset picture modes are all quite good for those who aren't picky and just want to watch their TV and the UN55B7000 LED does a decent job of assigning settings automatically based on the input. Of course, high-end buyers are more likely to calibrate sources to their liking or hire a pro. The TV will remember settings for dynamic, natural, standard and movie profiles for each source. That gives you a lot more flexibility than only having one or two, but it is complicated by a confusing lockout of various settings depending on how the source is identified. You can change the name of a source and find more or less settings available for adjustment, but how this works should be clearly documented. Also, there is a little lag when navigating menus, making constant adjustments of the many, many, many settings somewhat slow and annoying. The layout of the menus themselves and the amount of adjustments available is wonderful. The remote control works using RF so you don't have to point the remote at the TV. The remote is a little bulky, but offers all the buttons you'd want for operating the television easily. The scroll wheel is inaccurate for navigating menus and only really works as a directional pad.

Design
While, I prefer the touch of grey on some other Samsung, the small blue light on the bottom of the UN55B7000 LED is stylish, attractive and best of all, can be turned off. The bezel is attractive, thin, and highly glossy, but can be distracting when it picks up too many reflections. The 1.6" thick screen is amazing, but how often do you look at the side of your TV? The 61 lb. weight without stand is quite light for a 55" TV, but again how often will you move it? It does seem to use fairly little power and creates much less heat than a plasma TV. The swivel stand works well, also quite attractive with a brushed gunmetal finish.

Sound
I did not play around much with the sound as I use a 5.1 setup. I assume most people purchasing this TV will use external speakers, but the internal ones sounded just fine for what they are.

Comparisons
Competing models include the LG 55LH90/55LHZ, Toshiba 670u, Pioneer 500m/600m, Samsung 52B750/55B650/58B860, Sony xbr8 and Panasonic V10. My personal experience with display models showed the plasma screens to perform poorly in bright environments. Given the open layout and 20' ceilings of my living room, plus my wife's preference for at least dim lighting, this ruled out plasmas. The 58B860 in particular lacked the light output to produce bright enough whites in all but a pitch black environment. The 55LH90 seemed to be the closest competitor and much cheaper, with the xbr8 and 52B750 being close behind. The LH90 however, seemed to produce too many motion artifacts, couldn't deliver quite as much "pop," along with a slew of more minor negatives.

Misc.
Upgrading from a Syntax Olevia 37 hvs (matte screen LCD), this TV has truly blown me away. While the perfect (OLED?) TV is still out of reach, the UN55B7000 LED leaves little room for improvement. Input lag, a major concern for video gamers, runs under a tolerable 40ms according to my Rock Band 2 manual calibration with game mode turned on. With game mode off, the input lag increases to 140ms, which is easily noticeable. If running through a receiver, try component -> component instead of component -> HDMI for least lag. Game mode disables some processing but not the LED backlighting. The picture with game mode on even using a component connection (1080p) is incredible, though in need of some anti-aliasing on occasion. Turning off extra processing not disabled by game mode seems to have little effect on further decreasing lag, but I tend to turn them off. Auto motion is disabled in game mode, so expect some minor blur/ghosting.

The Samsung UN55B7000 also has a ethernet port for connecting to the internet and your home network (including DLNA or Anynet). A CD included with the TV helps you play media from your PC. Widgets will automatically update to display weather, sports, news, etc., but are a little slow and less convenient than popping open a laptop. Still, it's a good idea to plug in the TV to your router at least occasionally for firmware updates.

Conclusion
For those in the market for a 55" HDTV, the UN55B7000 LED is the most versatile and polished product out there. While a couple extremely high end plasmas beat out the UN55B7000 LED in a dark room, no other LCD performs as well and the plasmas quickly lose out as you increase ambient light. The attractive and practical design and feature rich menus complete this incredible package. While the 55LH90 is easy to recommend to those focused on price vs. performance or in love with matte screens, the UN55B7000 LED is clearly a step up and would make a remarkable addition to any loving home. Prices should come down as we head into the holiday season and onto the super bowl, however these seem to be selling as fast as they arrive for now.

UPDATE: After upgrading to firmware 1008, I experienced a sort of "crop circles" phenomenon caused by a malfunction in the smart LED backlighting. If you search online, you'll find several reports as it is a very widespread problem. I have posted a picture exhibiting the problem above. It can be fixed easily by turning your TV off and on again, but may reappear occasionally. I'm guessing it will be fixed by firmware update eventually, but no word from Samsung. Regardless, I'm still very pleased with my purchase. If the crop circles weren't so easy to fix, I'd probably be fairly upset with the problem. However, it was subtle enough only to notice against a still, uniform and light background.

2nd Update: Crop circles have not returned yet. I expect them to from time to time, but it seems more of a random thing than a problem that takes time to set in. Forum posters seem to have received word from Samsung that this issue is resolved and they are starting to roll out firmware updates (for now just as USB sticks to those reporting the problem)

As for calibration, I used Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition [Blu-ray] to get my brightness, contrast and sharpness set properly. I came up with very similar numbers to what I've seen others post. Contrast 87, Brightness 47, Sharpness 30 (though I couldn't tell much difference fro 0 to 30). Setting the color space requires pro equipment, so I looked online for some numbers and they seemed to work better than default. Of course, it's a great idea to get your set calibrated by a pro because optimal color settings are not going to be the same between most UN55B7000 LED 's. I use dynamic profile for daytime, standard for game mode, natural for sports (and some other TV shows), and movie for everything else.

Internet stops working then starts all of a sudden?

My internet stops working when I have on my AC and TV, but when I take off either of those or both, it starts working again. Could this be because there isn't sufficient power getting to my wireless router? Can the internet be affect by how much electrical power is running through the wires?

Have you tried switching them around just to see if it's a faulty wiring. or maybe your having some issues with your router signal, try moving it to an optimal location.

How to Choose and Use a Router

The router is basically a simple portable tool, consisting of a very high-speed motor mounted vertically on a horizontal base plate. In this article I'll cover the types of routers available as well as the safe way to use them.

Parts Of The Router

Motor – High-speed; oil bearings often in accordance with the owners manual.

Switch – Turns router on and off.

Adjusting Collar – Used to lock bit or cutter to cut at a desired depth. A good idea is to always do a practice cut first.

Collet Nut – Used to tighten the bit into place.

Bit – The business end of the router; should be straight and sharp.

Base – Level surface on which the unit stands. Wax occasionally for friction-free movement.

Collet – Holds the bit. Keep it free of dirt and woo d chips.

Handles – Grasp firmly when using.

The router has a chuck on the lower edge of its shaft that holds keen-edged cutting bits that can be extended below the base to cut grooves, trim edges, form recesses, produce mouldings, and otherwise shapes wood on which the router is used.

The power of the routers motor determines how deep and how fast the tool can cut through wood. A low-powered router, however, can do many of the jobs a high-powered router can do, providing it does them in stages. It can make a deep cut, for example, by means of a number of shallow passes.

The router, with its cutter bit operating, may be lowered into the work from above, then moved along the path to be shaped or cut, or it may move into the work from the edge. The bits are set for depth of cut by an adjustment on the router body.

If the bit is to make a large recess, as in a meat platter, it may be mounted on a piece of plywood with the cutter projecting downward through a hole in the plywood support. Or you can buy accessories that enable the router to follow templates or guiding edges on the work,

Use Of The Router

Grooving – Use straight bit. Set depth. Adjust router guide or straightedge at desired width. If work is narrow, clamp extra pieces on both sides to make the base wider.

Dadoing – A cut across the width of a board is called a dado. It is used to make slots for shelves.

Rabbeting – Use straight bit. Set depth. If end and edge are to be cut, do the end first (across the grain) to prevent edge chipping. Make large rabbets with several passes of the bit.

Plunging – Can use a variety of bits designed just for the purpose of cutting a hole in wood. This technique is commonly used to cut holes in door blanks.

With some experience, you will be able to cut designs freehand or even write your name.

As motor shaft, chuck, and bit revolve clockwise, you should move the tool from left to right. For safety remember that the router shaft and bit turn at extremely high speed and cut very fast. Be sure the bit is locked tightly in the chuck, and always keep your fingers clear of it. Never change bits or cutters or make adjustments unless the cord is disconnected (if you are using a cordless router simply remove the battery). Merely switching the tool off is not enough, as switches can be accidently bumped and turned on.

My roommate and I have two computers running off of a single router, but one's much faster than the other.?

We have a Belkin wireless G router and AT&T Pro DSL. Both computers run at normal speeds elsewhere, but at our place his runs radically faster. He likes to plug an ethernet cable directly into the modem, while I just use the wireless. Is there any run of the mill problem that would generally cause this? Like I can't even stream a youtube video or anything, which is obnoxious, because how am I supposed to distract myself? And for what it's worth, we both have reasonably new PCs with XP.
I plugged into the router but it didn't seem to go any quicker. So I guess it's not the wireless interference?
And if my roommate is running his wired, could that be affecting my wireless? Like if he switched off to wireless, would I be prone to speed up? Also, he was doing some bit torrent stuff earlier but I got him to shut it all down. Speeds still didn't seem to improve.
Is it worth playing around with other channels anyway?

Typically, the wireless bandwidth is not your bottleneck when working with the Internet. If you consider your network as a series of pipes, the Internet connection is a much smaller pipe that your average wireless connection, even though the wired connection is much faster. The slowest/smallest link/pipe determines the overall speed of the connection which, in this case, is the Internet connection.

When sharing Internet, if your roommate is using applications such as peer-to-peer (P2P), gaming, high-quality video or audio streaming or other high-bandwidth uses, they may be "using up the pipe." If you turn off the "faster" computer, does the "slower" computer start going faster? If that's the case, you most likely have some sort of bandwidth usage issue. If removing the faster computer from the equation does not help the slower computer at all, you more than likely have a problem with the slower computer.

If both systems are running WinXP, check to make sure the slower computer is not running any applications in the taskbar that might be eating up system bandwidth or connections, such as peer-to-peer (Bittorrent and the like are notorious for maxing out the number of connections allowed by the network stack of XP). If these applications are running, try closing them down to see if this resolves your issue. You can still run them, just make sure you're aware when you are, and turn them off when not in use.

Frequently, systems run slow (network or otherwise) if they have a virus or some form of malware. If you don't use both an anti-virus (check out Avast and AVG for free options, Norton Anti-Virus for something you have to pay for) AND an anti-spyware application (I like SpyBot Search and Destroy as it's free and works great), then there's a good chance you may have one or several of these programs, "helpers" or toolbars running, all of which can slow down your system or browsing experience. Fix these and you'll most likely fix the original issue.

Make sure that this isn't an overall system slowdown by trying your non-Internet related applications to see if they work as fast as you would expect them to. Does the operating system respond reasonably well? Have you tried a direct network connection, just in case your wireless is flaky (either the router or your computer's wireless network card)?

Miter Lock Router

How do I make a cellar door?

I need to make an exterior door (with doorframe) to my house's cellar. I have some basic tools (e.g. a sliding mitre saw) but no router. The cellar always stays above freezing point in winter, but the outside temperature can drop to 30 below. I'm worried about warping, and also about how I'm going to fit a lock. I'm thinking of strap hinges and perhaps a rim lock or similar - basically I need a simple design I can knock up in a few hours/days. Does anyone have DIY instructions?
I live in Sweden, and the door is a non-standard size.
Some interesting answers so far, but...
- The door must be of wood. I'll undercoat and paint it.
- The door must be upright - the cellar already has a door but it is falling apart.
- The door needs to be about 90cm x 160cm

Have you checked your local hardware/building supply stores? Bilco makes steel cellar doors which are sold at building supply stores come in standard sizes and go for between 260 and 300 dollars.

I have searched, and home made cellar doors are a thing of the past. You might have better luck at the local library.

How A Router Is Used For CNC Lettering

What is a CNC router? This machine is used to cut wood, plastic or metal and is generally used for routing out letters for signs, etc. Besides routing and signage, these machines can act as engraving machines, so you can get a lot of usage from one machine.

Many small fabricating shops, and even individuals are finding the accuracy and versatility of a CNC router very useful. As used equipment becomes available, more and more will be in demand since the price is lower for used equipment.

But they are still an expensive addition to the home shop, and plans to make your own have now become available in sizes as small as 15X15 to 50X60. The use of the machine would determine the size.

A CNC router allows a worker to create many projects that would be very time consuming and sometimes almost impossible to do otherwise. Cutting a complicated design into wood or even putting inlays into it are difficult for even the most skilled of carpenters, but with a CNC machine, these are done easily and accurately.

This makes CNC routers ideal for furniture making. The software for the machine allows you to design patterns or to do signs, once you know the software, and learning the software is not difficult.

The smaller machines, typically for the home shop worker, only require 120 voltage and can therefore be run on household current. These smaller table top machines only require 1 or 2 HP motors and are within the range of a hobbyist. A large machine can cost upwards of $20,000 while these smaller ones are about $7,000. Used machines are usually half the price of new ones, so for an investment of $3500, a home shop can have a very versatile machine. If someone were interested in making furniture for sale, it would pay for itself in no time.

A used CNC router therefore is quite a bargain. At half the cost of a new one, it is a very attractive option. Just make sure you shop around and determine the best machine for the type of machine work you will be doing. The used machines are older, and therefore not as fast as the newer machines. For the home shop this may not be as important an issue as price.

Used machines are available that have been rebuilt and these are a very good value as a rule. After a thorough inspection any worn or damaged parts of the machine are replaced and the result is a machine that is so good that many of the companies who do this are able to offer a warranty on the machine.

It is also important to have support available from the company. This will allow you to get installation instructions, and may also entitle you to free training on the software. If you are buying and using such a machine for the first time, this may be very important. You will want to make sure you are dealing with a company that can give you help and support in case you need it. A manual is important to have, but it may not answer all of your questions.

Help choosing a drill for a CNC router?

I am currently planning out a 3D CNC router, and have everything decided, except which drill to use. The type of drill i can use doesn't matter much, I can always change the design to fit it, but I would like to stay somewhat cheap. I want to be able to mill pretty much anything, including (if possible) angle iron. I realize this may be a bit too high an expectation, but it's good to set your sight high.

Unlikely you will find a single "drill" (you probably mean an end mill) that will work well for this range of materials, particularly if you want it cheap. Best suggestion, contact someone who sells end mills, drill bits, etc.

The type of tool is really determined by the geometry you need to produce, the material you need to cut, the surface finish you want to have, and the cutting speed you need for machining things economically. If you are doing production, an expensive properly designed tool will more than pay for itself by providing much higher cutting speeds and/or longer life, better precision, fewer tool changes, higher spindle speed, greater depth of cut, etc. If all these things don't matter, then your selection of cutter does not matter and you will get lots of practice sharpening your tool.
