About the Author
For a typical cylinder of compressed gas, how much volume does it contain at one atmosphere, room temp.?
Is there a "rule of thumb" estimation for volume of gas at one atmosphere for standard industrial gasses? The ones I am interested in are acetylene, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and propane.
The Fire Mashall wants a listing of the compressed gasses (among other materials) for the company I work for and I can't seem to find a quick conversion. This would be for 57 inch tall cylinders with a 9 inche diameter.
I imagine this varies some from gas to gas, but all I need is a general ball park number, e.g. 1 cylinder yeilds 2,000 gallons or one cylinder = 1,000 cubic feet, etc.

Well, I called our supplier, Polar Cryogenics. According to them, the typical cylinder they send to us contains approximately 300 cubic feet of gas.
There's no ballpark. It depends on the pressure of the gas inside the container. The volume is the same but if you put more gas in there the pressure is higher and the volume at one atmosphere will be greater.
Not all containers are pressurized at the same level. It depends on the type of gas, use, etc. As you can imagine, liquified gas means a lot more volume at one atmosphere.
Temperature is a factor too but its effect between a limited span is not important.
With the volume of the container and the pressure of the gas, use Boyle's law, pressure multiplied by volume is a constant. It's for ideal gas but it won't make you a huge difference.
Your volume at one atmosphere is the pressure of the gas inside the container multiplied by the volume of the container and divided by one atmosphere. Use consistent units.
